What is CBD?
You may remember the Simon and Garfunkel folk song, "Scarborough Fair". Various versions of this song have been strummed and hummed dating back to the 1600's. As it turns out, there really was a Scarborough fair and it was held in the town of Scarborough in Yorkshire, England. A forty-five day seaside trading fair where one might be bartering fabrics, ceramics, textiles, wines, honey, herbs and more.

The herbs: parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme (verse from the song) were likely a sampling of what the medieval herbalists brought to the annual fair to trade and sell. Herbs, spices and resins were traded and valued as much as gold. Fast-forward to today and you may find those same herbs at local farmers' markets in the form of tonics, tinctures, lotions, etc. And now, a not so new herb is joining the fray: hemp, of which cannabidiol (CBD), is a compound derived from cannabis (Cannabis sativa L.). CBD is sometimes referred to as a product of industrial hemp or agricultural hemp which is presumed to be one of the earliest plants to be cultivated by our ancient ancestors.

It may be confusing to learn that marijuana and hemp are both derived from the species Cannabis satvia L. Yet, industrial hemp has lower concentrations of the psychoactive component tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and higher concentrations of CBD. Hemp must contain no more than 0.3 of THC to be CBD.

We have provided this information as a comparative effort to have a way to think about CBD, as plant derived. There is so much information out there using unexplained acronyms and 10-gallon-hat sized words that it's hard to make sense of it all. One must do their own due diligence when choosing a CBD brand or product. Something to remember when researching a plant based product is the knowledge that there are many goods which come to us through flowers, plants, roots, barks, etc. They come as medicines, flavorings, dyes, food and drink and more. They come as life savers, such as the beautiful little periwinkle flower which contains compounds used to treat childhood leukemia and Hodgkin's lymphoma. Truly amazing. Some other plant related drugs and chemicals include Stevia (sweetener), L-dopa (Parkinson's disease), digoxin (cardiotonic), rutin (capillaries), bromelain (anti-inflammatory), caffeine, camphor, codeine, morphine, salicin (aspirin), thymol (anti-fungal), papain (digestive enzyme), it goes on and on and on.
